Discover the Liveau Paper Mill

Just a few kilometers from our hotel in Clisson, on the banks of the Sèvre Nantaise river, the Liveau Paper Mill is one of those places where you do more than just look.

Located in Gorges, this former watermill tells the story of paper-making while bringing traditional machinery and age-old techniques back to life.

It makes for a unique outing to enjoy with the whole family during your stay in the Nantes vineyards.

A watermill turned paper mill

First mentioned in 1407, Le Liveau was originally a flour mill.

Converted in the 19th century and later restored, it now offers a hands-on way to discover how a traditional paper mill operates.

During the tour, step into the machine room to see the waterwheel, the stamp mill, and the various water-powered mechanisms.

The sound of the machinery and the guide’s commentary bring this artisanal heritage to life a far cry from a standard museum visit.

Make your own sheet of paper

This is often the highlight of the visit for both young and old: here, everyone gets hands-on!

All tours are guided and include the chance to hand-make your own sheet of paper.

Over the course of about an hour, you will also explore key moments in the history of paper and visit the area dedicated to printing.

A video area and temporary exhibitions round out the experience.

During school holidays, the mill regularly hosts additional activities, such as children's workshops and treasure hunts.

Stop by the mill’s shop

Before you leave, be sure to step into the shop.

Artisanal papers, handmade notebooks, stationery, writing accessories, and books allow you to take home a souvenir directly linked to the craftsmanship discovered during your visit.
