A jewel of French heritage

Founded in the 11th century, the castle of Clisson became a strategic ally in the 15th century.

Indeed, it protected the border of the Duchy of Brittany. As a fortified castle and seigneurial residence, the building was abandoned by its owners in the middle of the 17th century. During the Revolution, a fire ravaged the site.

The remains of the castle inspired a French neo-classical sculptor, François-Frédéric Lemot. He bought it in 1807. It was not until more than a century later that it was classified as a historic monument. It now belongs to the Loire-Atlantique department.

 

A varied cultural programme

Throughout the year, the medieval castle of Clisson is the scene of numerous events.

From February to December, you can take a guided tour of the site, accompanied by an in-depth commentary from your guide.

During the school holidays, various workshops are organised for families to get together to develop their creativity and arouse their curiosity.

In the summer, attend historical re-enactments by theatre groups, music, dance and circus shows.
